The  History of Woodside P.S. 1176

Following the recommendation of District Inspector Topp, Woodside Primary No. 1176 was established 1/1/1873.  This date is also the same date as the establishment of the Education Department in Victoria.  On the same date an earlier school (Rural School 130 Woodside) was struck off the rolls.  This earlier school opened by Edward Fry and his wife from November 1871.

It's amazing to consider that Woodside Primary School has been at the forefront of education from the very establishment of the Education Department in Victoria.

The oldest surviving building at Woodside P.S. dates back to the early part of last century.  This beautiful building, now used as the school Art Room and Library is owned and maintained  by the school.

In 1909 Woodside was operated half time with Darriman West School No.3070.

In past days there were many schools such as Darriman West but sadly most have closed due to changing population trends.  Woodside's enrolments also fluctuated over the years but as it is strongly supported by the true locals it has a great future.  The new school to be built soon is another milestone in our great history.

The back to, organised to help celebrate Woodside Primary School 1176's 125th year was a great success in 1998.

To see what some of our past students and staff are doing now, click on the link the 'Aussie Schoolmates'  or the 'schoolfriends' site.  You just need to register (free) & then you can track them down.

For a more detailed account of information about Woodside's rich history, please contact the school.

If anyone has school photographs from some years ago that we have not got here, could they please contact me at the school so that I can arrange to have them scanned and added to this page.  Daniel
